Losar (lo=year, sar=new).  Is the Tibetan New Year. In most Eastern cultures the years are symbolized by an animal, creating a calendar with 12 animals and five elements that will change every twelve years.  In Tibet is almost the same with the difference being that the Rooster is named the Bird; the Rabbit, the hare and the Rat is named the Mouse.

The symbolism for 2008 is the Male Earth Mouse

Contrary of other Eastern Lunar horoscopes, the Tibetan horoscope is never a forecast,
and it will not give predictions. The elemental divinations are based on the lunar year, month and day with their corresponding element. This plays an important role in medicine as well as in astrology. The most important purpose of the horoscope is to prepare us to learn in the nature of life. Since human birth is a privilege, we have many opportunities to improve our human behavior and reach a higher spiritual goal. Tibetan Astro Science derives from the Kalachakra Tantra (Kalachakra means cycles of life) a teaching given by Lord Buddha himself. This system has three cycles, internal, external and alternative. The internal cycle deals with the energy flow of the human body. The extern al cycle is concerned with the motions of the planetary structure. Both the external and internal cycles work together through the karmic process of life. Alternative Kalachakra employs the meditation practices in a complex yoga, nstructed for purification.

Through Tibetan Astrology we can know the elemental karmic conditions in life and how
to overcome our limitations. It is designed to help us in the learning process of living. In the system of elemental analysis Tibetan Astro Science has three branches: astrology, martial conquest, and elemental divination. According to Tibetan Astrology, 2008 is the year of the Male Earth Mouse; the following elements influence one

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MALE EARTH MOUSE

Personality: The Mouse is full of charm, loves company and acts with flair, is direct in dealings with people.  Although amiable and generous on the outside, the Mouse is egotistical, calculating and manipulative.

The Mouse can be ambitious, selfish, successful, skill organizer. It is sensual and appreciates luxury. In its emotional life can be sentimental and generous to those it likes, and can also be an excellent intimate friend.

The Mouse is very observant and many have made excellent writers and journalists. Its skills are particularly appreciated in times of crisis, for the Mouse has an incredibly strong sense of self-preservation.

The element Earth makes the Mouse very level-headed and will never takes unnecessary chances, and is prepared to proceed slowly leaving nothing to chance.

ELEMENT EARTH

The element Earth is symbolized by a yellow square and numerically represented by number two and the spirits lord of the soil. The Earth element emerges naturally in a static manner and its function is one of heaviness and solidity. Inherent of a diet of bread, pasta, and the flesh from the limbs of the animals, the Earth element is represented by the muscle tissue and  the spleen. In case of ill-health an imbalance of Earth element is indicated by lethargy and asphyxia.

The Earth element is located in the intermediate directions: SW, SE, NE, NW; by the ascendents ox, sheep, dog and dragon, Saturn and the four intermediate constellations. Offerings to the earth is recommended this year: planting seeds, trees, burning of incense. This year is an excellent year for agriculture.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

In my quest to give always the correct information I asked one of my Precious Teachers, HE Lhading Tulku Rinpoche, which practice should we do to improve our learning process of living and to help others, and He recommended to repeat (as many times as possible) the mantra of Sakyamuni Buddha:

OM MUNI MUNI MAHA MUNIYE SO HA

“May all sentient beings enjoy happiness
and the causes of happiness!
May they be free from suffering and the
causes of sufferings!
May they never be separated from the
great happiness devoid of suffering!
And may they dwell in the great equanimity
that is free from attachment and aversion!
